This Emerald in Quartz Silver Necklace is unique. The hand-hammered sculptural swirls give it a sophisticated and visually satisfying look. I have hand forged it from one piece of recycled silver, and as a result, it is a twisting design like the guitar playing that inspired it. I have blackened then given a burnish polished finish to highlight the beautiful surface texture. The emerald in quartz matrix in this necklace is a natural uncut stone with dramatic contrasts. The silver is set round the stone to reflect the shapes of the emeralds.
Inspired by Music and Synaesthesia
I am synaesthetic, which is a neurological trait where the senses cross. Therefore I have a strong visual impression of shape, colour, movement and sometimes texture when I hear music. My synaesthetic reaction to the sound of an electric guitar inspired this Emerald in Quartz Silver Necklace. As a result, the shapes in this silver necklace are little snippets of electric guitar music made visible by my synaesthesia. Recycled Silver
I recycle the silver I have used in Emerald in Quartz Silver Necklace from old and broken silverware and cutlery. Consequently, I can eliminate the need for newly mined silver in my work. I melted a piece of old silverware down. Then I hand forged the resulting ingot of molten silver into this carefully crafted necklace.
