Green Tourmaline and Gold Pendant
A delicate leafy green tourmaline cabochon sits at the centre of luxurious swirls on a gold coin with the feel of ancient treasure. The coin is made from warm yellow 9ct gold, and the green tourmaline is set in bright sterling silver. The tourmaline is centred in the pendant as balance and counterpoint to the shapes in the design. This necklace represents wholeness and calm and is tactile and centring to wear.
This Green Tourmaline And Gold Pendant was made by me and is hand engraved with close attention to detail using long practised and carefully honed skills. The edge of the necklace disc is smoothed like an ancient coin. It comes hung on a burgundy red leather thong but can easily be transferred to a favourite chain or charm necklace.
Inspired By Music and Synaesthesia
I am synaesthetic, which is a neurological trait where my senses cross. Therefore I have a strong visual impression of shape, colour, movement and sometimes texture when I hear music. The Green Tourmaline And Gold Pendant is inspired by what I see when I listen to “Wild Is The Wind” by David Bowie. The sinuous lines of Bowie’s voice in greens and blues, sun-rays of cymbal splashes, flame-like electric guitar, fluid shapes of purple and pink bass. The wildness and romance of the song reflected in the design of the necklace.
Recycled Gold
Mining gold is an environmentally invasive process, so I use recycled precious metals in all my work as far as I can. The gold I used to make this Green Tourmaline And Gold Pendant comes from old and broken jewellery. Consequently, I am eliminating the need for newly mined gold in my work. If I need to use new gold, I buy fair mined gold. This means I can support miners who do a dangerous and challenging job, ensuring my jewellery is helping them to a proper wage. I melted a piece of old gold jewellery down. Then I hand forged the resulting ingot of into this Green Tourmaline And Gold Pendant.
