Rose Cut Quartz Drop Earrings
These unique Rose Cut Quartz Drop Earrings are hand-forged in sterling silver. I carefully hand hammer each earring into its elegant shape over curved steel stakes. I skillfully move, stretch and form the silver until I have the shape that looks right. Then I leave the subtle textures of hand working. Consequently adding interest to the surface of these Rose Cut Quartz Drop Earrings. The earrings have sterling silver butterfly scrolls to secure them to pierced ears. The quartzes are rose cut and mismatched one is oval one is round both are a delicate pale mint colour. I have set the stones with open backs to let the light shine through their natural beauty.
Inspired by Music and Synaesthesia
I am synaesthetic which is a neurological trait where my senses cross. Therefore I have a strong visual impression of shape, colour, movement and sometimes texture when I hear music. These Rose Cut Quartz Drop Earrings are directly inspired by what I see when I listen to electric guitar. When someone plays electric guitar it looks silver to me, like lightning made of mercury. As a result, the shapes in these earrings are little snippets of electric guitar playing made visible by my synaesthesia.
What Is It Made Of?
Mining silver is an environmentally invasive process, so I use recycled silver in all my work. The sterling silver I used to make these earrings comes from old and broken silverware and cutlery. Consequently, I can eliminate the need for newly mined silver in my work. I melted a piece of old silverware down. Then I hand forged the resulting ingot of molten silver into these Rose Cut Quartz Drop Earrings. The quartzes are both reclaimed from antique jewellery.
