Shiny Stud Earrings
I hand forged these unique Shiny Stud Earrings in sterling silver. To get their natural shape, I use water casting and forming over curved steel stakes. Water casting involves pouring molten silver into cold water which creates some fantastical shapes. I then work the silver nugget until the earring looks right and is comfortable to wear. I leave the subtle textures of handwork, which consequently adds interest to the surface of these Shiny Stud Earrings. Then I burnish polished them to give the high shine while retaining the textural detail. The earrings have sterling silver butterfly scrolls to secure them to pierced ears.
Inspired by Music and My Synaesthesia
I am synaesthetic which is a neurological trait where my senses cross. Therefore I have a strong visual impression of shape, colour, movement and sometimes texture when I hear music. These Shiny Stud Earrings are directly inspired by what I see when I listen to electric guitar. Electric guitar looks silver to me, like lightning made of mercury. As a result, the shapes in these Shiny Stud Earrings are little nuggets of electric guitar playing made visible by my synaesthesia.

What Is It Made Of?
Mining silver is an environmentally invasive process, so I use recycled silver in all my work. The sterling silver I used to make these Shiny Stud Earrings comes from old and broken silverware and cutlery. Consequently, I can eliminate the need for newly mined silver in my work. I melted a piece of old silverware down. Then I hand forged the resulting ingot of molten silver into these Shiny Stud Earrings.
